CNN —Will Smith dusted off his black suit and Ray Bans for a surprise performance at Coachella. Smith, who starred in three “Men in Black” movies, showed up toward the end of Balvin’s extraterrestrial-themed set, sporting the iconic look that became synonymous with the alien-fighting agents in the film. (Balvin’s performance and Smith’s cameo were shown on Coachella’s YouTube livestream.) In the “Men in Black” franchise, Smith starred as Agent J, a former NYPD detective who is recruited to serve in a secret organization that deals with all extraterrestrial matters. Smith starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones.

CNN —William Friedkin, director of iconic 1970s films including “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” has died, his wife Sherry Lansing, the former CEO of Paramount Pictures, told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. Friedkin won the Oscar for best director for “French Connection” in 1972, going on to be nominated for the same trophy again two years later for occult horror “Exorcist,” the genre-defying hit that racked up ten nominations and two statuettes. Curiously, Friedkin once told Cinephilia Beyond that his original intention wasn’t even to make a horror film with “The Exorcist.”“I recognize that audiences for generations have considered it a horror film,” he observed. “I won’t deny that, but when I set out to make it, the writer and I never had any concept of it as a horror film. He is survived by his wife, along with two sons, Jackson and Cedric Friedkin.

But the unique accounting standards that the industry has long relied on to make those calculations is anything but straightforward. “Hollywood accounting,” as a concept, is so specific to the entertainment business it has its own Wikipedia page. And while experts say this kind of creative accounting is perfectly legal, the tactics involve some of the most fantastical fictions ever devised in Tinseltown. To actually make the movie, the subsidiary inevitably takes on expenses — crew wages, craft services, set design, props etc. That means all of these “creative” expense allocations shouldn’t affect what net profits the studio’s shareholders see.

The Coen brothers return to the Texas noir roots of their first feature, “Blood Simple,” for the most successful McCarthy adaptation to date. It won Oscars for best picture, directing and screenwriting, as well as Javier Bardem’s supporting turn as one of McCarthy’s nihilistic villains, an implacable killing machine who speaks in riddles and engages his prey in fatal rhetorical jousts. But the heart of the movie, about a briefcase full of money and the in-over-his-head opportunist (Josh Brolin) who pilfers it, is Tommy Lee Jones as a small-town sheriff who wants out of the game, which seems to get more sinister and incomprehensible by the minute. Din păcat,e mult nu întotdeauna înseamnă și bun. Astăzi, vreau să vă propun cinci thrillere, excelente în opinia mea, care m-au convins să mai revin pe Netflix. Un film cu patru Oscaruri: pentru cel mai bun film, cea mai bună regie, cel mai bun scenariu adaptat după romanul lui Cormac McCarthy și cea mai bună interpretare în rol secundar de Javier Bardem. Este un film foarte aproape de realitate, cu un casting surprinzător și cu o serie de personaje foarte bine dezvoltate. Spre final, nu mai știi cine e bun, cine e rău, dacă e adevărat sau e o minciună.
